Bill Bowerman

Bill Bowerman was an American track and field coach, innovator, and co-founder of Nike, Inc., whose impact on sports and footwear design is immeasurable. Born in 1911, Bowerman coached countless Olympians at the University of Oregon and was known for his relentless pursuit of performance improvement. His experimental spirit led to groundbreaking innovations, including the creation of the first Nike Waffle Trainer, inspired by a household waffle iron.

As Nike’s co-founder alongside Phil Knight, Bowerman transformed the athletic footwear industry through a focus on lightweight materials, biomechanical efficiency, and athlete-driven design. His philosophy—“If you have a body, you’re an athlete”—became a cornerstone of Nike’s identity.

Bill Bowerman’s legacy is defined by innovation, curiosity, and empowerment. His work bridged the gap between science and sport, laying the foundation for Nike’s global success and modern athletic performance design.
